These illustrated interpretation boards were designed for the Gallanes Lough Amphibian Habitats Enhancement Project, completed in early 2025 as part of the County Cork Biodiversity Action Plan. The project was funded by Cork County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund, in collaboration with The Herpetological Society of Ireland.
Created to engage visitors of all ages, the two illustrated information boards combine scientific accuracy with clear, accessible design. The first explains the fascinating life cycles of two of Ireland's native amphibians, the common frog (Rana temporaria) and the smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris). The second introduces the habitat enhancement project, explaining why amphibian conservation is important and how carefully designed ponds and wetland habitats can help these remarkable species thrive.
Projects like this demonstrate how thoughtfully designed interpretation boards can make biodiversity, ecology and conservation more accessible to local communities, schools and visitors, encouraging a deeper understanding of Ireland's native wildlife.
